GRAIN ROT How to Survive the Corrupted
They react to sound, movement, and each other — predict the chaos.
The Corrupted are former Sparks whose vessels were overtaken by the Rot. They still move, scream, and hunt, but nobody is home anymore. Unlike scripted horde shooters, Corrupted in GRAIN ROT respond to sound, movement, and each other’s states in ways that feel emergent — which makes them terrifying in co-op extraction runs.
This guide covers Corrupted behavior basics, combat versus evasion, blocking tactics with furniture, and team callouts that prevent total wipes. Use it alongside enemy types reference and deep layer threats.
What the Corrupted are
Lore-wise, the Rot grows deepest underground. It enters wood first, then corrupts the Spark inside. The result is a hostile vessel that may scream without tactical intent — do not take it personally. Mechanically, Corrupted are environmental threats that escalate as you descend and as you generate noise.
They are not uniform. Different deep-layer zones spawn variants with different speeds, reach, and rot-application attacks. Full release Elite Encounters will add boss-tier Corrupted; demo players fought standard deep swarms only.
Sound discipline
The loudest player-triggered events early game:
- Grinder activation — long-range alert
- Demolition chains — repeated mallet impacts
- Combat impacts — especially gunfire when unlocked
- Emotes and voice-adjacent sneezes from rot sickness
Assign a scout to call “noise budget” — how many grinder loads remain before you extract. If Corrupted arrive, decide immediately: fight in chokepoint or abandon loot.
Combat basics
Your mallet demolishes furniture faster than Corrupted flesh. Melee weapons from Outpost inventory tiers — sword and hammer — improve kill speed but expose you to rot attacks. Guns appear at higher tiers; ammo and noise tradeoffs apply.
Effective combat pattern:
- Pull into a doorway one player blocks with a construct
- Anchor strikes while Carrier continues breaking high-value props if safe
- Spark-ready Flex player stands backup for vessel breaks
Chasing kills deep into unknown rooms is how teams lose extract timing.
Evasion and blocking
Sometimes zero kills is optimal. Drop a bench or cabinet to narrow a corridor, then sprint toward elevator. GRAIN ROT’s physics lets furniture act as temporary walls — learn rotation controls from constructs guide.
Blocking also works on teammates — intentionally or not. Communicate before closing a door on a living vessel.
Rot application attacks
Some Corrupted apply rot ooze that persists after extraction. Uncured rot causes sneezing fits in the Outpost and can destroy rooms during elevator transit. Always check corruption meters before boarding. Cure procedure: Rot Sickness Guide.
Multi-Corrupted coordination
When several Corrupted arrive from different vectors, they may interact — flanking, staggered screams, or piling into the same chokepoint. Treat this as a fail state unless anchors have a prepared funnel.
Abort rules for multi-spawn:
- Drop low-tier scrap
- Pre-load elevator with carrier
- Anchors disengage on timer, not on kill count
Co-op callouts that help
Use short phrases:
- “Contact — rear left”
- “Noise spike — grinder stop”
- “Rot on me — no elevator”
- “Spark down — flex rescue”
Long debates during contact guarantee vessel breaks.
Single-player Corrupted strategy
Solo players should avoid double engagements entirely. Use shorter routes in demo biomes and extract at first Corrupted contact unless you have tier-two weapons unlocked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Do Corrupted spawn infinitely?
Pressure escalates with depth and noise. While not always infinite, deep layers can spawn overlapping waves if you stay too long after alerting them.
Is the mallet enough for combat?
Barely. It works for weak encounters early. Prioritize Outpost inventory tiers for sword, hammer, and gun access.
Can Corrupted follow us to the elevator?
Yes. Do not assume the elevator zone is safe until doors close. Board quickly and cure rot before riding up.
Are Corrupted the same as rot sickness?
No. Corrupted are enemies. Rot sickness is a debuff applied by some attacks that persists at the Outpost until cured.
